Leaving Las Vegas

Leaving Las Vegas (1995, imdb)
Directed by Mike Figgis
Written by John O’Brien (novel), Mike Figgis (screenplay)

Elisabeth Shue

This movie goes way beyond being decent™, way way beyond that honored line in the sand; up the beach and entering the jungle it continues all the way through to mounting the volcano it then proceeds by diving into the tempestuous core, finally resting there in an alcoholic stupor, languishing but content with it’s destiny.

This movie netted Nick Cage an Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role as well as three further nominations (Elisabeth Shue Best Actress, Mike Figgis Best Director & Screenplay) and it’s easy to see why. It’s a very dark drama dealing with mature topics and all in all it’s an almost perfect movie.

What in the world happened to the director, Mike Figgis?
