The Ring (2002, imdb)
Directed by Gore Verbinski
Written by Kôji Suzuki (novel), Ehren Kruger (screenplay)
This is a remake of the Japanese movie リング. While remakes are usually repugnant little whorish creations like some papier mâché likeness of a person with a ticket booth and glory holes all over, this one isn’t so bad.
Firstly cinematography and visual language is very fine. It takes it’s cues faithfully from the Nipponese original but greatly benefits from a (much) higher budget and the result is morosely beautiful.
Secondly there’s Naomi Watts. She’s wonderful in this one; beautiful, driven, aloof and charmingly unfettered.
